Author Reading and Q & A at Willamette University on November 8
Lidia Yuknavitch, an outstanding writer of three books of short stories, a memoir, and a forthcoming novel, is coming to Salem to give a reading and a Q&A on Tuesday, November 8, in Willamette University's Hatfield Library, at 7:30 p.m.
Why go to author readings? There is something about being in a room and talking about writing with an actual living author that tends to re-animate your creativity and your drive to write. They are a great chance to learn things about writing and to become a part of the local writing community.
Here’s more information about Lidia Yuknavitch, taken from Willamette University’s notice about the event:
Lidia Yuknavitch is the author of The Chronology of Water: A Memoir and three volumes of short fiction: Her Other Mouths, Liberty’s Excess, and Real to Reel, as well as a book of literary criticism, Allegories of Violence. Her work has appeared in Ms., The Iowa Review, Exquisite Corpse, Another Chicago Magazine, Fiction International, Zyzzyva, and elsewhere. Her book Real to Reel was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award, and she is the recipient of awards and fellowships from Poets and Writers and Literary Arts, Inc. Her work appears in the anthologies Life As We Show It (City Lights), Forms At War (FC2), Wreckage of Reason (Spuytin Duyvil). She teaches writing, literature, film, and Women’s Studies in Oregon.
Since its release last year, The Chronology of Water has garnered rave reviews in dozens of publications, including Publisher’s Weekly: “This isn’t a memoir ‘about’ addiction, abuse, or love: it’s a triumphantly unrelenting look at a life buoyed by the power of the written word.”

Alive and well
As you all know, we are at the later stages of publishing the first issue and extremely busy (hence the poor blog updates). This will soon change. Every two weeks, one of the editors at GMR will either blog about news, events, opinions, reviews, or writing tips for your reading enjoyment.
I would also like to announce that Gold Man Review had the opportunity to interview three incredible and distinguished authors in our local community. The interviews dive into their craft, their publications, where they came from, and where their writing journeys are taking them. All the interviews will be published in the first issue of GMR.
In other developments, the new Gold Man website is coming right along. On the site, we will be recognizing four distinguished artists from Issue I in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and photography. Interested in checking out the website and reading about the featured artists? "Like" our facebook page, gather the hints, and get involved in the website address "guessing game" and contest. Whoever guesses the website address correctly and posts it first will win a free copy of Issue I.

Long Time No Post
The long absence means we’ve been busy, busy, busy these days.
Layout is in the review process by the editors, we’re working on getting a web site (a blog is okay, but so hard to maintain), setting up pre-sales, getting invitations ready for the launch, and making plans for next year when submissions open again January 2012.
In the next few weeks the official Gold Man Review site should be up, don’t forget to check it out.

Thank You
Gold Man Review wants to thank everyone who submitted for the first issue. The turnout was great and we had many difficult choices to make. The rich mixture of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and photographs, verifies Salem has talent.
Currently, we are in the process of formatting the accepted pieces, sending out contracts, and interviewing our distinguished authors, to meet our November 1st print deadline.
Stay tuned for more updates.

Waiting on a Response?
We’re still considering all submissions and probably won’t be able to get back to everyone until after May or shortly before. We’ve received some really great material and deciding what to keep and what not to keep has been very difficult. We apologize for the delay.

Party!
Right now we are looking toward the future, specifically this November when Gold Man Review makes its official debut. Since we are a regional publisher, we get the unique opportunity of having a launch party, which we definitely plan to do (we like parties). The date isn’t set yet, but we’re thinking either Friday, November 4 or Saturday, November 5. Of course, everyone is invited. We’ll be posting more details about the launch party as time goes on.

Big Big Plans
Our goal at Gold Man is to give our published writers as much exposure to the literary world as possible and to shine a spotlight on Salem. Right now, we are in the process of getting together a list of awards and prizes that we plan to send our published writers. So far, the list includes the Pushcart Prize, the Best American Anthologies in Short Fiction and Poetry, and the O. Henry Prize.
We’re definitely thinking big here.

Thank You
Word is getting out about Gold Man Review. Thank you and keep telling your friends about us!
We’re getting really excited for November when Gold Man makes its debut. We’ve had some questions on whether Gold Man will be an online or print magazine so we thought we’d clear things up.
Gold Man will be a print magazine. The closer we get to publication, the more we will be working with local bookstores and coffee shops to stock the publication.
